Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between some of the most disadvantaged farmers and workers in the developing world and the people who buy their products. When farmers and workers can sell on Fairtrade terms, it provides them with a better deal: an opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future. Fairtrade offers us a powerful way to reduce poverty through our everyday shopping.

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Farmers benefit from organic farming through various ways. Primarily they benefit from receiving a higher premium when selling on the cotton. Organic farming also doesn't require high levels of investment, this in turn means less involvement with money lenders. Organic farming also allows farmers to synergise with nature the farming techniques they use. In turn farmers have an abundance of traditional knowledge with them and within their community. Finally using organic practices does not expose farmers to potentially hazardous chemicals

A Carbon footprint is the overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions, consisting primarily of carbon dioxide, that a business, event or production produces. It is one of the most common measures of the effect of an individual, community, industry, or country on the environment. An increase in greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore in carbon footprint, is the primary event associated with climate change that has led to global warming. Prairie as such puts it's production of garments through manufacturers that are aware of their effect on the environment. Because of this they use power generated through wind and solar power. Any extra capacity is sold into the network so that at times of weak sun and wind they can use power from the grid without effecting the environment as a result.
